How To Write a Good Cover Letter

Cover Letter

How many times have you googled 'How to write a good cover letter', 'cover letter template' or 'cover letter tips' during a job application process to create the perfect cover letter? We understand that writing an individual cover letter for each position you apply for may seem like a daunting task but remember, the screening process can be extremely rigorous, so a cover letter is an opportunity to grab the attention of your future employer from the very beginning.

We've all done it, written a really great cover letter and used it to send with applications for very different roles within very different businesses. However, there are no two positions or companies that are exactly the same and your cover letter should highlight these differences. Hence, it is very important that instead of using the exact same cover letter template for every role, you customise it to suit the specific role you are applying for.

So here are our top cover letter tips on how to write a good cover letter that will make the hiring manager of your dream job not only notice your cv but be impressed before they even get to it!

Keep it Short and Sweet

In the first paragraph, let them know why you are applying; who you are, not your entire life history but enough information for them to know your objectives for the next step in your career and why you want to take that next step.

Also, don’t forget to include the role/job you’re applying for!

Acknowledge The Value and Goals Of The Business You Are Applying To

In the second paragraph, touch on why you’d like to work for the company and let them know of any knowledge or passion you have for the sector.

Let the person reading your cover letter know that, not only have you done your homework on them but that you share their values and when they hire you, you will continue to promote these and help the business reach its goals.

Make Sure You Read The Full Description

The third paragraph should highlight your relevant skills and experience; this is why it's so important to read the job ad. You need to make sure that the skills your dream job requires are skills you already have, or that can be picked up quickly.

Summarise any other strengths you might have picked up throughout your career or personal life, that will add value to the role and business as a whole.

Round Everything Up

The fourth and last paragraph should round up your letter, thanking the employer for their time. You should sum up why you would add value to their business, how you will help them reach their goals and genuinely letting them know that you look forward to hearing from them.
