StartUp Grind: Ian Ritchie
It was great to hear from Ian Ritchie (Founder of OWL & non-executive Chairman of Iomart, Computer Applications Service, the Interactive Design Institute, Cogbooks, Blipfoto and Red Fox Media) at the recent StartUp Grind Edinburgh event.
Ian has a wealth of experience in the tech start up scene and shared with us a brief history of his inspiring career. From pitching software ideas to Bill Gates & meeting Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the World Wide Web), to investing in and mentoring a variety of tech start-ups here in Scotland, Ian is more than qualified to provide the entrepreneurs present with some invaluable advice:
1.) Don't worry too much about dilution if you need your investment to grow
2.) Don't hire "Yes" people
3.) Make sure you trust and enable your team
4.) Don’t be afraid to hire teams from “unsuccessful” startups – people learn invaluable lessons from their mistakes.
Ian’s fireside chat was followed by a great networking event with such discussion topics as “how do large corporations allow for creativity and innovation within their tech teams” and “what’s the best route to investment – crowdfunding, angel investment or VC investment.”
Thanks to Lisa & Phin at Startup Grind for organising another great event, and to Ian for taking the time to share his insight with us.
