Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) presents an internationally recognised programme of work from the world’s leading artists and ensembles from the fields of opera, theatre, dance, and music, showcasing artistic excellence, internationalism, and innovative programmes where virtuosity and diversity are recognised and celebrated.

The International Festival has a leading role in the development of creative practice and a history of presenting artworks in support of international relations.  As such, the organisation sits at the heart of an international, economic and cultural success story and is recognised as one of the UK’s most significant cultural assets.

The Recruitment Challenge

EIF operates from three buildings: The Hub on Castlehill is the operational base of the Festival and home to its year-round education & rehearsal activities, as well as performances & other events during the August Festival period.  In addition, it leases warehousing space in Leith and manages a high-end rental property in the Quartermile area of Edinburgh.

Eden Scott was appointed on a retained basis to source a Head of Estates who would play a critical leadership role in delivering operational excellence across the EIF estate, as well as leading a number of projects to optimise the current estate and establish a future direction for the space occupied by the organisation.  

The role included exploring whether relocation to alternative premises was feasible, establishing future warehouse requirements and sourcing suitable space as well as managing the refurbishment of existing office space in the Hub.  It was important to source a candidate who could deliver operationally but was also capable of delivering these strategic priorities aligned to the organisations long-term objectives.

The Recruitment Solution

Eden Scott worked closely with the team to develop the Job Description and associated Advertisement.  Through our knowledge and experience of the estates and FM sector, coupled with our extensive and thorough approach to market mapping, we targeted individuals with the necessary experience and skills to fulfil the requirements of the role.  In addition, it was critical to the shortlisting process that we identified candidates with strong cultural alignment to both the organisation and also the close-knit team they would be joining.

Recruitment Success

Following our sourcing and assessment of candidates and working closely with EIF, we refined the shortlist and EIF moved ahead with 4 shortlisted candidates.  The process involved an initial virtual meeting with key stakeholders involved in the process followed by an informal meeting and tour of the Hub building to allow the candidates to get a feel for one of the properties.  This process led to a successful appointment with the requisite skill set to deliver the required outcomes for the role, both at a strategic and operational level.
