Nevis Range is a complex, multi faceted organisation in Fort William comprising adventure activities (mountain walking and high ropes courses), snow-sports (skiing and snowboarding), mountain biking (world champion ship downhill courses and cross country)and mountain vista view points. It is the highest ski range in Scotland. With the exception of the High Ropes courses all other activities are supported by the Gondola (70, 6 person cabins) that transports the public to a superb high mountain area and restaurant.
There is a strong emphasis on engineering and the integrity of the year round, safe operation of the gondola, and in the winter months, the safe mechanical up lift (tow-bars and quad chairs), on the mountain, for skiers and snowboarders. Added to this there are catering facilities both on the mountain and at the base station. With the catering facilities for large numbers and the uplift available this provides an ideal venue for special evening events.
The future will require diversification given the challenges to all ski areas due to global warming. As such plans to extend and supplement the winter season with up to date snowmaking facilities is in the early stages. The construction of a ‘Zip-wire’ from the top station of the Gondola to a point close to the carpark is being planned and recent planning permission to build 3 trails on the high mountain (2 mountain bike tracks & 1 walking track) are well ahead in planning. Added to these plans is the eventual construction of small retail outlets at the bottom Gondola station with the construction of a number of ‘Glamping’ pods close by.
