An exciting opportunity has now arisen for a dynamic and senior professional communicator able to tell the story of this great university to audiences that stretch across the globe and apply for a newly created role, that of Deputy Director - Communications.

This role will lead on all communications for the University and will work closely with a wide range of stakeholders. Reporting into the Executive Director of Global Marketing and deputising as and when required.

Overall Purpose of the Role:

Develop and lead a professional approach to corporate communications across the Heriot-Watt Group ensuring alignment with marketing, recruitment and admissions activities

Drive innovation, best practice and enabling frameworks, especially in the use of digital communications and channels - ensuring clarity of approach and demonstrable impact of activity

Safeguard and significantly enhance the University's global profile and reputation through delivery of integrated brand-led communications that help to deliver the University's strategy

Lead and manage a highly effective Communications team to deliver communications that shape and tell the story of the University to audiences that stretch across the globe

Deliver highly impactful and strategic communications plans, award-winning creative campaigns and compelling stories of their success

Drive internal communication that ensure their global community of students, scholars and professionals are committed to the goals set out in their new strategy, engaged with the University's values and understand how they contribute to their own and collective success

Lead out on a key new development areas

Work successfully with senior stakeholders, to provide expert analysis and advice to the senior leadership team to drive engagement with the University's strategy both internally and externally

Work with strategic partners and external bodies to deliver joint communications that will add value to their relationship and their reputation

Drive reputation and awareness so an effective media relations strategy and associated plans

Provide strategic support and guiding frameworks for all campus based Communications teams

Key skills required:

Significant experience of effective senior leadership and management, leading and delivering a wide range of corporate communications activities

Experience of successfully developing and leading organisation-wide communications strategy and implementation

Extensive experience of financial planning

Extensive experience of media liaison, network development, crisis communications experience

A strong track record of delivery in a communications environment in a large, complex organisation

Experience of change management and delivering significant projects

Experience of working within different cultures in a global context

Experience of working with internal and external stakeholders and partners to deliver strategic communications

Strategic experience in supporting a large, complex, global organisation

Experience of managing highly specialised operational teams at or near Director level

Demonstrable experience of managing human resource, workloads and changing priorities for self and others

Demonstrable ability to develop and deliver plans and communication campaigns using digital and other channels

Good understanding of key legislation e.g. FOI, GDPR, Copyright etc.

A very good understanding of social media

Applying candidates are also to be qualified to degree level, combined ideally with relevant professional membership and have working experience in Higher Education or similar.
