About Citizens Theatre

Citizens Theatre (the Citz) is recognised as one of Scotland’s leading producing theatres, rooted in its Gorbals community while maintaining a distinctly international perspective. It is celebrated for bold interpretations of classic works and impactful new plays that reflect contemporary Scotland.

All sets, costumes and props are crafted in-house, bringing together a dynamic network of artists, freelancers and staff who help deliver memorable experiences in Glasgow and beyond.

Known for its theatrical skill, imagination and Glaswegian realism, the Citz creates work that is ambitious, accessible and shaped by the unique character of its historic Victorian theatre. Alongside revitalised classics, it remains a major commissioner of new writing, with future seasons introducing more original work than ever before.

A new studio theatre will further strengthen its role as a creative hub, supporting emerging artists, hosting touring productions and presenting children’s theatre from across the UK.

Participate, the theatre’s creative engagement programme, plays a key civic role through Youth, Education, Adults, Families and Community Residences strands. With fully accessible studios and citywide projects, it offers space for creative exploration, community building and cultural participation for all.

Connecting Our Community

The Citz Culture

Citizens Theatre has long been a creative and collaborative workplace where colleagues support one another and find opportunities to connect.

After seven years of working remotely or in temporary spaces, the organisation is using its return to the building as a chance to reflect on how it wants to work. Staff, freelancers, visitors and communities are all considered in shaping a positive and forward-looking culture.

Regular company meetings led by the Artistic and Executive Directors, along with staff working groups, provide space for open discussion about the future of working life at the Citz. Employees are encouraged to think about what practices should be retained, what could evolve and what entirely new approaches may be introduced. Everyone, whether newly appointed or long-standing, is invited to help shape the next chapter of the organisation.

The theatre’s culture is grounded in its core values. Heart reflects its passion for theatre, fairness and teamwork. Roots captures pride in Glasgow, ambition and care for the wider world. Grit speaks to the organisation’s inventive spirit, commitment to equality and determination to make things happen.

Inspiring A Community

What's Next For Citizens Theatre

The redevelopment of Citizens Theatre represents the largest investment in producing theatre in Scotland for a generation. This forty million pound project restored and expanded one of the country’s oldest working theatres, marking the first fully integrated redevelopment of the building since it opened in 1878.

In August 2025, the theatre reopened, offering upgraded spaces designed to support greater artistic ambition and welcome larger and more diverse audiences. The opening season has already delivered strong results, with positive responses from audiences and communities and performance targets for box office, trading and fundraising largely achieved.

The organisation continues to learn about its renewed building, its audiences and its business, which will remain a priority in the year ahead. The 2026 to 2027 period will be the first full year of operations post reopening and provides the chance to fully embrace the potential of the new facilities.

The Citz is seeking people who are energised by this moment of growth and change. They welcome applicants with passion, resilience and a commitment to high quality work, whether or not they have a theatre background. Professional skills from a wide range of sectors are valued and there is no single route into joining the organisation.
