The Food and Drink Industry

The Food and Drink industry is the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, contributing about £95.4bn to the economy every year. The industry employs just over 400,000 workers, 16% of the overall manufacturing workforce in the UK. The wider supply chain employs almost 4 million people and generates over £100 billion to the economy each year. It is well reported that the industry requires 140,000 new recruits by 2024 to feed an expected population of 70 million people.

Government and industry are committed to growing the sector further through education and apprenticeships. The Food & Drink Federation has pledged to triple apprenticeships within the food and drink industry by 2020. A lot of work is also being done by volunteers to promote STEM subjects in schools whilst highlighting the varied and exciting career opportunities on offer.

In Scotland, the Scottish government along with Scotland Food & Drink have launched ambition 2030. An initiative and commitment to double the turnover of the industry to £30 billion by 2030.
