Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW)

Salary: £35,000 £45,000

Location: Highlands (with travel across northern Scotland)

A long-established, employee-owned environmental consultancy is seeking an Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) to join its expanding Scottish team. With over 30 years’ experience supporting both small and large-scale development, the organisation works across renewables, construction and infrastructure to deliver sustainable, environmentally responsible outcomes.

The business is experiencing strong growth, driven by increasing demand across Scotlands renewables sector. As part of this expansion, they are partnering with a Tier 1 contractor to deliver a significant programme of substation projects, including one site with substantial ecological requirements - so much so that they may need to turn work away without additional EnvCoW support.

The Role

As an Environmental Clerk of Works, you will play a key role in ensuring environmental compliance across a diverse range of project sites.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting site inspections to monitor environmental compliance on construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Delivering Toolbox Talks on ecological and environmental topics.
  • Advising clients and contractors on ecological and environmental obligations.
  • Carrying out protected species surveys, habitat assessments and pre-construction walkovers.
  • Producing high-quality ecological reports and species protection plans.
  • Liaising with clients, contractors and stakeholders to provide clear, practical advice.

You will work across a varied project portfolio, including:

  • Wind farm developments ongoing habitat monitoring with potential future development phases.
  • MOD projects cable ducts and associated works (non-EIA).
  • Community hubs ecological inputs and ECIAs.
  • Substation projects with a Tier 1 contractor significant ecological oversight and compliance.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel, including occasional overnight stays.
  • Experience conducting ecological field surveys.
  • Ability to work independently in remote locations, with support from the wider team.
  • Flexibility for occasional unsociable hours (e.g., bat surveys, night work).
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, professional approach.
  • Willingness to work away from home when required.
  • A positive attitude and good sense of humour.

Desirable

  • Protected species licences (bats, badger, Schedule 1 birds, otter, freshwater pearl mussel).
  • CSCS card.
  • Tree-climbing qualifications.
