An established environmental consultancy is seeking an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) to support the delivery of a diverse range of projects across Scotland, including renewable energy, residential, commercial, and infrastructure developments.
With opportunities available throughout Scotland, this role offers the chance to play a key part in protecting biodiversity while helping projects progress safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental legislation.
The Role
As an Ecological Clerk of Works, you will provide ecological supervision and monitoring on construction and development sites across Scotland. Working closely with contractors, clients, and project teams, you will ensure ecological mitigation measures and environmental controls are implemented effectively while providing practical advice to support successful project delivery.
Projects may include wind energy developments, solar schemes, housing developments, commercial projects, and major infrastructure works.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct ecological site inspections, monitoring, and supervision activities.
- Ensure ecological mitigation and protection measures are implemented in accordance with approved documentation and legislation.
- Provide practical ecological advice to site teams, contractors, and clients.
- Monitor compliance with environmental commitments and licence requirements.
- Respond to ecological issues arising during construction works and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Maintain accurate site records, reports, and monitoring documentation.
- Support the delivery of protected species surveys and licensed activities where required.
- Contribute to the mentoring and development of junior ecology staff and technicians.
What You'll Bring
Essential
- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Associate membership of CIEEM or eligibility to apply.
- Valid CSCS card.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Previous experience as an Ecological Clerk of Works or within an ecological consultancy environment.
- Strong ecological field skills and knowledge of UK wildlife legislation.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to work independently, make informed decisions, and manage priorities effectively.
Desirable
- NatureScot protected species licence(s).
- Experience supporting licensed ecological works.
- 4x4 driver training.
- First Aid qualification.
- GIS, mapping, or digital data capture experience.
- Equivalent practical experience will be considered where appropriate.
Working Environment
This is a predominantly site-based position requiring regular travel throughout Scotland and occasional periods away from home. The role involves working on active construction and development sites, often in varied and challenging environments.
While some home-based working may be possible for reporting and administration duties, the majority of time will be spent on site supporting project delivery.
