How to Get a Job With No Experience
You’re scrolling through job postings when you land on the perfect job. You know you’ve got what it takes - this is the role for you. But then you spot that dreaded line: “5+ years of experience required”.
It’s easy to feel discouraged when you’re looking for your first job. It’s certainly difficult to gain experience when even entry-level positions ask for evidence of time served in a particular role.
But here’s the thing: 72% of hiring professionals prioritise a no ssessing skills over what’s written on your CV, and 34% of hiring managers say they judge candidates by their potential, not their experience.
In this blog, we reveal our tips on how to get a job with no experience. With a bit of perseverance, you’ll be on the right track to land your first role.
Highlight transferable skills
Focus on your skills over experience. Transferable skills like communication, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability can be more valuable than job-specific experience.
Example: If you’ve volunteered or worked on group projects, emphasise your teamwork, leadership, or project management skills.
Hiring for skills rather than experience makes businesses more flexible, opportunities for growth, and a fresh perspective.
Volunteer to gain experience
Volunteering is an excellent way to gain relevant experience and make connections in your chosen industry. Many nonprofits and community groups need help with tasks like marketing, event planning, project management and admin support.
Volunteering can give you a taste of what it’s like to work in your chosen industry without having to fully commit.

Tailor your CV and cover letter
Customise your CV and cover letter to show relevant skills and experience that match the job description.
Example: You’re applying for a Marketing Assistant position but have no formal marketing work experience. Instead, you’ve helped a friend create social media posts for their business and volunteered at your local community group.
Your tailored CV:
Social media management: “Created social media posts and scheduled content for a friend’s small business, helping them increase their follower count by 10% in two months.
Project organisation: “Led event planning for a local community group, managing all communications and promotion efforts”.
Apply for jobs even if you don’t meet all the requirements
Apply even if you’re missing some qualifications. Job listings are often wish lists for the ‘perfect candidate’, who, from our experience, rarely exist.
Most companies will hire someone without the exact requirements if they seem like a good fit.
That being said, don’t apply for jobs entirely out of touch from your experience. If you’ve just completed high school, it’s probably best not to apply for Chief Executive roles.
Consider temporary or contract work
When you’re trying to gain experience, temporary or contract work can be an excellent option. These short-term roles help you get your foot in the door, gain valuable skills, and expand your network, all while you search for a more permanent position.

Focus on your passion and motivation
Employers often prefer candidates with a genuine interest in the field over those with experience but no passion. Share how your passion aligns with the company’s mission.
Example: In your cover letter, explain why you’re drawn to the company and how you’re willing to go above and beyond to succeed.
Final thoughts
Companies are willing to overlook formal experience if you can demonstrate your value in other ways. It’s all about showing you have the right skills, mindset, and growth potential.
